Leachman Cattle CEO
For more than 17 years, Rolling Hills Ranch in Salina, KS, has partnered with Leachman Cattle to continuously improve herd performance. Owner Trace Walker, a dedicated rancher and businessman, is committed to raising the best cattle possible while managing the bottom line across his various ventures—including Blue Beacon International, a North American chain of truck washes. His data-driven approach to ranching led him to seek out the best genetics to maximize profitability, and the results speak for themselves.
In 2009, Trace sent his calves to Decatur County Feed Yard (DCFY) in Oberlin, TX, where Leachman helped analyze their performance. The results were eye-opening—Rolling Hills calves ranked in the bottom 40% of all cattle fed at DCFY. Determined to improve, Trace worked with Leachman to integrate our highest $Profit herd sires to breed Rolling Hills cows. In 2012, the calves from Leachman’s high-$Profit sires ranked in the top 15% at the feedlot. That transformation solidified Trace’s confidence in elite genetics as a game-changer for his operation.
Today, Rolling Hills Ranch runs 500 multi-generation Leachman Stabilizer cows, carefully selected for high $Profit traits. To optimize returns, the herd is strategically divided:
This strategy has paid off—2024 marked the most profitable calf crop in ranch history!
In 2023, the ranch decided to further accelerate their program by buying design mated, elite $Feeder, male sexed Stabilizer embryos. The resulting bulls were reared on the ranch and used as yearlings. Then, the bulls are sold to other Leachman customers as ranch-developed bulls.
By replacing their terminal sires annually with ET bull calves, Rolling Hills ensures their genetics stay at the cutting edge of $Feeder potential. The first calves from these ET bulls will go to harvest in 2025—stay tuned for even more exciting results!
Rolling Hills Ranch is proof that precision genetics, strategic herd management, and a commitment to continuous improvement lead to industry-leading results. With Leachman’s data-driven approach, the future has never looked brighter for this operation.
